New York suspends mandatory flu shots for health workers

New York public health workers will no longer be required to be vaccinated against both the seasonal and H1N1 flu virus, state officials announced Thursday, prompted by a vaccine shortage.
A statement from Gov. David Paterson announced the policy change on behalf of State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines.
Daines had originally said that public health workers must be vaccinated for the seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, by November 30 or risk discipline.
The Public Employees Federation, New York’s second-largest state employees union, sued over the requirement and was awaiting a state Supreme Court hearing scheduled for October 30...

Study:"H1N1 Flu Causes 'Unusual' Damage to Lungs"

The new pandemic H1N1 flu may cause blood clots and other unusual damage in the lungs and doctors need to be on the lookout, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday.
Two studies published in the American Journal of Roentgenology show the need to check X-rays and CT scans for unusual features, and also point out swine flu can be tricky to diagnose in some of the sickest patients.
H1N1 flu is causing a pandemic, and while it is not particularly deadly, it is sickening many younger adults and older children who usually escape the worst effects of seasonal flu.

Flu shots urged for Canadian livestock workers

OTTAWA — To reduce the risk of the H1N1 virus mutating, livestock workers were pressed Tuesday to get their flu shots following the discovery of a turkey flock with the illness.

The outbreak at a farm owned by Hybrid Turkeys near Kitchener, Ont., poses no risk to human health, officials said at a news conference, but they warned about the dangers of viruses moving back and forth between humans and animals.

Most Germans don't want swine flu vaccinations

In the latest step to fight an anticipated breakout of the H1N1 swine flu virus, Germany's 16 state health ministers have announced they plan to order another 18 million vaccination units. That's enough to immunize nine million more people and ensures there is enough stock should demand surge later in the year.
The health ministers have already ordered 50 million swine flu vaccinations for 25 million people, as each person requires two doses of the vaccine. That means there will be enough vaccine to cover 40 percent of the German population.
The latest order is subject to funding being available. The thorny question of who will bear the cost of this – the federal government, the health insurers, the state health departments or local authorities – is being discussed at a special working group meeting in Berlin on Wednesday....

California Hospitals Urge Nurses Union to Stop H1N1 “Scare Tactics”

The California Hospital Association (CHA) is engaged with hospitals and state and local public health officials in a voluntary statewide effort to ensure that all hospital workers — including registered nurses — are vaccinated against the H1N1 flu virus.
“Hospital caregivers are on the front lines in responding to the H1N1 pandemic,” said CHA President and CEO C. Duane Dauner. “Although no one yet knows how rapidly the H1N1 flu may spread or how serious the illness may become, it’s essential that the nurses and other clinicians who work in our community hospitals be given the highest level of protection possible against the virus so that they can continue caring for patients. The best protection against the H1N1 flu is to be vaccinated.”
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that “vaccines are the most important tool we have for preventing influenza.” Based on this expert advice, Dauner urges the California Nurses Association to join with CHA and state and public health officials to promote vaccinations to all health care workers. TEXAS:"Don't count on getting an H1N1 shot for a while..."

Predictions that H1N1 vaccine would “trickle in” to Texas and the Houston area have turned out to be overly optimistic because of production delays.Instead of arriving by the thousands, doses have been hitting local health departments by the hundreds.
The federal government originally promised 120 million doses of H1N1 vaccine nationwide by now. Only 13 million have come through.
Late Wednesday, the Texas Department of State Health Services estimated that state providers have received 360,000 vaccine doses and predicted that number would more than double by the end of this week. In one week’s time, Germany is scheduled to begin a mass immunization against the swine flu. But the type of shot a person gets is to depend on their position in society, leading to complaints about a ’second class’ swine-flu vaccine.
Politicians, certain government employees and members of the German military are scheduled to receive one type of the swine flu vaccine, while average citizens in Germany are to receive a different one.
The difference between the two vaccines is that the one meant for members of the government is said to have fewer side-effects. It also lacks certain additives which are said to be present in the version for the general population.
A spokesperson for the German interior minister, quoted by the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, said that the vaccines marked for the government were ordered months ago, when there were no clear differences between the two vaccines. She added that the other version was not a second-class vaccine...

Canada Decides To Approve Unlicensed Adjuvanted Vaccines

Canada’s largest-ever immunization campaign is about to get underway after the federal government rushed approval for a vaccine that could be administered to the population in as little as a week.Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq’s office confirmed Wednesday an announcement would be made allowing provinces and territories to proceed with H1N1 flu vaccinations as soon as possible.
It’s Approved
“It’s officially approved,” said Tim Vail, a spokesman for Aglukkaq.
The Public Health Agency of Canada had said it was aiming to have the vaccine available in early November.Other countries have already begun vaccinations. The United States has started giving swine-flu shots to people in groups thought to be at greater risk.
Japan started its vaccinations Monday and Britain started Wednesday.
Two million doses of the swine-flu vaccine have already been shipped to the provinces and territories to await final sign-off from Ottawa.The government aims to ship around three million doses a week as the vaccine rolls off the production line.

The vaccine needed regulatory approval before the federal government could give the provinces and territories the green light to start the H1N1 flu shots...

WINNIPEG, Manitoba-Turkeys in the Canadian province of Ontario have become infected with the H1N1 flu virus, but no birds or eggs from the farm entered the food supply, provincial government officials said on Tuesday.
The infection poses minimal risk to human health, Dr. Arlene King, Ontario's chief medical officer of health, said in a news conference in Toronto.

July 4 swine flu outbreak shows pattern of virus

More than 100 new cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy got infected with swine flu at a July 4 barbecue and fireworks display but quick isolation measures got it under control within two weeks, researchers reported on Tuesday.
The outbreak provided a unique opportunity to study the virus closely and Dr. Catherine Takacs Witkop and colleagues say they discovered some surprising things. Among them:
— Nearly a quarter, or 24 percent, of patients still had virus in their noses seven days after getting sick, including 19 percent who had been well for at least 24 hours;
— Tamiflu, the drug used to treat influenza, did not help any of the previously healthy young men and women get better any quicker;
— Most cadets were sick for five days or longer;
— Eleven percent of the cadets became infected.
In June, soon after the new H1N1 virus was declared a pandemic, 1,376 new cadets arrived for their first training at the academy, near Colorado Springs, Colorado.
"A total of 134 confirmed and 33 suspected cases of new H1N1 infection were identified with onset date June 25-July 24, 2009," Witkop's team wrote in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine....

Germany's government to get "special swine flu vaccine"...

The general population will be offered the GlaxoSmithKline vaccine, called Pandemrix, which contains a new booster element, or adjuvant, as well as a preservative containing mercury.

Controversy has grown around the rapid licensing of the GSK vaccine – and a similar one being made by Novartis. Critics said not enough testing had been conducted before European licensing authorities rushed an approval.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, her cabinet members and ministry civil servants as well as those working for other agencies will get Celvapan, produced by US firm Baxter, which does not have the adjuvant or the preservative, according to Der Spiegel.

It is thought the adjuvant may lead to a stronger reaction in the patient – which to a certain degree is the point, meaning the vaccine can contain less of the virus yet still provoke the crucial immune system reaction. But this is also what some say is the additional risk – and has led to stocks of the traditional kind of vaccine being bought in for pregnant women and young children. Celvapan does not contain the adjuvant or the preservative. Rather, it contains entire dead viruses rather than the pieces which are in the traditional vaccine...

USDA confirms H1N1 in Minnesota pigs

WASHINGTON-At least one pig from Minnesota has tested positive for the H1N1 virus, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Monday, the first case of a pig contracting the virus in the United States.Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement that USDA officials have begun to reach out to U.S. trade partners and international organizations to emphasize that H1N1, also known as swine flu, cannot be contracted by eating pork products."We have fully engaged our trading partners to remind them...that there is no scientific basis to restrict trade in pork and pork products," Vilsack said. "People cannot get this flu from eating pork or pork products. Pork is safe to eat." The USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed the presence of H1N1 after an initial test suggested that as many as three pigs may have had the virus. USDA is continuing to conduct tests to confirm other potential positive tests from the pig samples.
The original samples were taken as a part of a university research project from pigs shown at the Minnesota State Fair between Aug. 26. and Sept. 1.
USDA officials have said that the pigs did not show signs of sickness, and officials suggested they likely contracted the virus from some of the nearly 1.8 million people who visited the fair...

Florida plan advises hospitals to bar some patients in event of severe flu pandemic:Outbreak would limit some hospital care....

Florida health officials are drawing up guidelines that recommend barring patients with incurable cancer, end-stage multiple sclerosis and other conditions from being admitted to hospitals if the state is overwhelmed by flu cases.

The plan, which would guide Florida hospitals on how to ration scarce medical care during a severe flu outbreak, also calls for doctors to remove patients with poor prognoses from ventilators to treat those who have better chances of surviving.

That decision would be made by the hospital.

The flu causes severe respiratory illnesses in a small percentage of cases, and patients who need ventilators and are deprived of them could die without the breathing assistance the machines provide....

Children "should not be given common painkiller after a vaccine"

Paracetamol, found in Calpol, can reduce the effectiveness of the injections, researchers have found.
As well as a painkiller, the drug is used to prevent fever, which can be a side effect of vaccines, as the body responds to the jab.The team behind the study believe that paracetamol could limit how the immune system responds to the vaccination.The drugs effects could leave children underprotected when they come into contact with dangerous diseases in the future.The study tested the effectiveness of vaccines for flu, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and polio if children had been given the painkiller as well.The research found that the children had significantly lower numbers of antibodies, the immune systems response to infection, in those given paracetamol for 24 hours after the jab.
Prof Roman Prymula, from the University of Defence in the Czech Republic, who led the study, said: "To our knowledge, such an effect of paracetamol on post-immunisation immune responses has not been documented before.”
Researchers gave the drug to 226 children every six to eight hours for 24 hours after the vaccination.They then compared the findings with those from 223 children who had the same injections but were not given the painkiller.The research team also analysed 10 previous studies on the effects of paracetamol, which confirmed their findings, which have been published in the Lancet medical journal....

UK's SWINE FLU HYPE:"Fears over low take-up of swine flu vaccine among health staff..."

There are signs that many health staff will decide against being immunised because of doubts about the vaccine’s effectiveness, fear of side-effects and a view that swine flu is not particularly dangerous.The Department of Health fears that the low take-up of the vaccine could have serious consequences when the expected second wave of the pandemic hits in the winter flu season.
Ian Dalton, the NHS’s national director of flu resilience, warned vaccinating front line staff was “absolutely critical” and would help save people’s lives.He wrote to local NHS chief executives in England in September saying: “We all know that uptake of the seasonal flu vaccine among NHS staff is traditionally low. It is an NHS board responsibility that we do not find ourselves in this position with the swine flu vaccine.”
However hospitals expect only a faction of staff to volunteer to receive the vaccine.
One urban hospital chief executive, speaking anonymously to the Guardian newspaper, said: “At the moment in my hospital, if nothing changes then it could be that 10%-20% of staff have the swine flu jab.Staff could have the virus and pass it on to patients, a proportion of whom will die, albeit a very small proportion.The other consequence is that if loads of staff go off with swine flu that will leave us short-staffed, which is dangerous to patients.That’s a bigger danger than transmission”...

From next week GPs will begin inviting people with health problems, damaged immune systems and pregnant women to come forward for immunisation.
However, concerns have been raised about the effect of the postal strike.
Sir Liam Donaldson, the government's chief medical officer, said the timing of the industrial action was unhelpful as GPs would be sending out appointment letters in the post.
But he added: "We are working very hard to try and get round that."
It is possible that appointment letters could be marked as urgent and prioritised for delivery or surgeries could use other forms of communication, such as the telephone.
Nonetheless, Sir Liam said the vaccination programme was starting just in time....
