TOKYO-The number of people in Japan who have contracted influenza since early July, most of whom are believed to have been infected with the H1N1 virus, is estimated to have reached 9.02 million by last Sunday, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases said Friday.
The total number of people suffering from influenza who visited hospitals across the country during the week through last Sunday was estimated at 1.64 million people, up 110,000 from the previous week.
The number of flu patients reported in the week by roughly 5,000 designated medical institutions across Japan rose from 157,626 to 169,095, the institute said.
The institute's report for the previous week, released Nov. 13, showed a decline in the number of flu cases, apparently because most of the medical institutions were closed Nov. 3, a national holiday...
